Alternative energy and renewable energy are given full treatment in this course. Fossil fuel combustion engineering, nuclear power and power plant operations are covered. Site assessment, installation, operations and maintenance of renewable energy systems such as photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal, wind and biofuel are also reviewed and examined. Distributed generation with combined heat and power is defined and microturbines, smart/micro grids and demand/response systems are examined. Other topics covered are energy transmission efficiency, conservation, waste, pollution and depletion. Special consideration is given to new and emerging technologies in the energy industry.
